Ten-Man Bayern Munich Blank FC Augsburg (Again) In D.F.B. Pokal

========================================================

A second all-Bavarian derby within ten days time produced a much more balanced affair but exactly same result as visiting BAYERN MUNICH, the record German Cup winner who were reduced to ten men two minutes into the second half, held off pesky FC AUGSBURG 2-0 in the third round of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal.

FC Augsburg trainer MARKUS WEINZIERL not only altered his formation for the return match but, in fact, made five changes to the team which had lost at home to Bayern Munich in the 16th round of the Bundesliga less than two weeks earlier, as well. ANDREAS OTTL, the 27-year-old summer signing from SC Hertha Berlin who has made exactly 100 Bundesliga appearances and scored five goals for Bayern Munich in his career, was deployed as a defensive midfielder just in front of the back line. With both the first and second choice goalkeepers unavailable for the D.F.B. Pokal-Derby with their fellow Bavarian adversaries, the very well-traveled Austria international ALEXANDER MANNINGER was called upon to stand between the sticks for FC Augsburg.

Manninger, the 35-year-old who earned a Premier League winner’s medal with FC Arsenal of London at the conclusion of the 1997/98 campaign and has also collected 33 international caps for Oesterreich in his career, arrived at FC Augsburg this past summer after four years with crack Italian Serie A club FC Juventus of Turin.

It was Bayern Munich shot-stopper MANUEL NEUER, the 26-year-old first choice for Deutschland who has collected 36 international caps thus far in his career, who was called upon to make a sharp save (with the aid of the goal post) just eight minutes into the match, however, after a low drive from South Korea international JA-CHEOL KOO was deflected by Bayern Munich’s Brazilian centerback DANTE.

France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY of Bayern Munich is the picture of frustration after receiving the straight red card from match referee THORSTEN KINHOEFER in the 47th minute of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal match with host FC Augsburg watched by the sold-out crowd of 30,660 spectators at the SGL Arena in Bavaria.
========================================================

Bayern Munich took the lead shortly before the half hour mark when France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY made a trademark run down the left flank and pulled the ball back for Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ in the 26th minute. Super Mario, who has missed most of this 2012/13 season so far on account of ankle surgery, was able to fend of FC Augsburg defender PHILIP and steer the ball past Manninger for his first strike in the D.F.B. Pokal this term. Overall, Gomez has netted four goals in eight games since returning to action for Bayern Munich in late November.

Bayern Munich should have doubled its lead with about a minute remaining until the halftime break when a 30-yard blast from Ukraine national team captain ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK, the 33-year-old defensive midfielder who has made 120 appearances and scored six goals for Bayern Munich in all competitions since signing from Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg in the summer of 2009, smacked off the crossbar and bounced down over the goal line but the match officials, to be quite frank, outright blew the call.

Misfortune for the Bavarian side trained by JUPP HEYNCKES continued just after the re-start when Ribery was provoked by Choo and foolishly retaliated. A straight red card left Bayern Munich with just ten men and gave FC Augsburg a surge of confidence with which to press their attack. But Neuer, who had made a fine save in a one-on-one situation with striker SASCHA MOELDERS in the first half, again did well to halt the FC Augsburg’s leading Bundesliga goal-scorer in the second half while the Bayern Munich backline did its part, as well.

Switzerland international XHERDAN SHAQIRI, the versatile midfielder bought from reigning Swiss champion FC Basel this past summer, sealed the deal for counterattacking Bayern Munich just five minutes from full time. Germany international winger THOMAS MUELLER, who leads Bayern Munich with ten assists in the Bundesliga this season, prompted the insurance marker with a lovely square ball for the little Swiss tank. Shaqiri, meanwhile, prepared to celebrate Christmas having scored three goals on his last four appearances for his new German employers.

FC Augsburg’s South Korea international JA-CHEOL KOO (7), the 23-year-old who scored an important second half goal for his country in the 2-0 victory over Asian rival Japan in the Bronze Medal Match of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games hosted by London this past summer, shields the ball from Germany international midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER during the intra-state Derbyspiel at the sold-out SGL Arena in Bavaria.

Spieltag # 16

0 – FC AUGSBURG
2 – BAYERN MUNICH ————— Mueller pen 39′, Gomez 63′

A first goal by the visitors from penalty spot not so long before the halftime break and a second strike just a few minutes after the hour were more than enough to deal with a lackluster home side as record German champion BAYERN MUNICH blanked punchless Bavarian rivals FC AUGSBURG to maintain its double-digit lead in the Bundesliga.

Germany international goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER needed to be sharp to prevent the shot with the nasty bounce by FC Augsburg midfielder TOBIAS WERNER from finding the back of the net but, for the most part, the Bayern Munich custodian had little to do in posting his 11th clean sheet in 16 Bundesliga matches this season.

Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC, the summer signing from Vfl Wolfsburg who set Bayern Munich back 13.0 million Euros while scoring 12 goals in all competitions for his new employers so far this season, had a hat trick of good chances at the other end all within a ten-minute span but was betrayed but erratic finishing skills to let FC Augsburg off the hook.

The turning point of the match arrived in the 39th minute when FC Augsburg’s Sierra Leonese centerback GIBRIL SANKOH was caught handling the football inside the penalty area. In-form Germany international THOMAS MUELLER, who also scored in the UEFA Champions League triumph over Belarussian side BATE Borisov in midweek, took the kick and easily beat Morocco international netminder MOHAMED AMSIF to give visiting Bayern Munich the 1-0 advantage in the all-Bavarian Derbyspiel. Mueller’s ninth goal of this 2012/13 Bundesliga season lifted the 23-year-old winger into a tie for the Bayern Munich team lead this term with the suddenly out-of-form Mandzukic.

Mueller, of course, dipped to just seven goals in 34 top flight matches for Bayern Munich last season after netting 13 and then 12 times, respectively, during his first two campaigns in the German Bundesliga.

Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, who also got his name on the scoresheet for Bayern Munich in the 4-1 victory over BATE Borisov on the final match day at the group stage in the UEFA Champions League, added an insurance goal for the visitors only minutes after coming on as a substitute for the ineffective Mandzukic. “Super Mario”, who racked up 54 goals for the record German champions in the last two Bundesliga seasons combined but is really only just returning to action after having undergone ankle surgery in August, was making but a fourth appearance in the German top flight this term against FC Augsburg in the all-Bavarian derby. Gomez played a nice one-two with France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY and then beat the unfortunate Sankoh for pace to score his second goal of this historic 50th Bundesliga season.

Bayern Munich, who have already clinched the mythical title of Herbstmeister for this term, increased their impressive lead in the Bundesliga table over nearest contestant Bayer Leverkusen to eleven points with the win in Augsburg.

France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY, the tricky veteran who has scored four times after eleven appearances in the German top flight this term, recorded his seventh assist in the Bundesliga this season by setting up the second Bayern Munich goal against Bavarian rival FC Augsburg in front of 30,660 spectators at the sold-out SGL Arena.

Bayern Munich 2 – FC Augsburg 1

France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY of Bayern Munich (right), celebrating his 29th birthday on Saturday, fends off the challenge of FC Augsburg defender and Spielfuehrer PAUL VERHAEGH, the 28-year-old former Holland U-21 international who arrived from Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem in the summer of 2010, during the intra-state Bavarian battle at the sold-out (as always) Allianz Arena in the southern Germany.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 29

2 – BAYERN MUNICH —————— Gomez 1′, 60′
1 – FC AUGSBURG ———————— Koo 23′

A Blitztor with less than a minute gone by and a second strike on the hour by the reigning Bundesliga Torjaegermeister allowed record German champion BAYERN MUNICH to defeat a stubborn FC AUGSBURG 2-1 in the latest all-Bavarian derby match.

Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ pounced on his own rebound after FC Augsburg goalkeeper SIMON JETZSCH, the 35-year-old former Germany U-21 shot-stopper who spent three seasons with TSV 1860 Munich quite some time ago, had pulled off a decent save. France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY, who leads Bayern Munich with 13 assists in the Bundesliga this season, engineered the lightning strike with a trademark run down the left wing. With the visitors hovering just above the relegation zone, the hosts might have had cause to envision yet another high-scoring affair this spring.

But FC Augsburg, who a respectable effort in a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich at home earlier this season, had other ideas in mind. And so, in the 15th minute, Germany international defender JEROME BOATENG needed to make a fine play to deny FC Augsburg’s Cameroon international MARCEL NDJENG with the net wide open. But praise for the former Manchester City central defender would not prevail long after visiting midfielder AXEL BELLINGHAUSEN pulled the ball back following a run down the left flank eight minutes later.

========================================================

========================================================

South Korea international midfielder JA-CHEOL KOO, who only arrived on loan at FC Augsburg from Vfl Wolfsburg on the last day of this past January, struck a low shot that caught Bayern Munich’s Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER off-balance, to be generous; a fourth goal on only his tenth appearance with FC Augsburg for Koo, then, who had failed to score in 22 Bundesliga games for Vfl Wolfsburg after signing from FC Jeju United in January of 2011.

The birthday boy Ribery was denied a career-high 12th Bundesliga goal of the season when his ball struck the post and, thus, the two Bavarian sides went to the break deadlocked.

Bayern Munich did seem to benefit from the arrival of Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS from the bench not so long into the second half. Shortly thereafter, Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN worked a brilliant one-two with Germany World Cup right back PHILIPP LAHM before the Dangerous Dutchman provided Super Mario with an excellent square ball to redirect past the defenseless Jentzsch. 25 goals in the German top flight this term for Gomez, who just recently signed a new contract which keeps the productive 26-year-old striker at Bayern Munich until 2016.

The hosts might have added a third, but then again FC Augsburg had a few chances to poach its share of the spoils, as well. With Bayern Munich scheduled to face defending champion and current Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund in a winner-take-all match this week, the end result was all that really mattered, anyway. Thus, the stage has been properly set.

BAYERN MUNICH : Neuer – Lahm, Boateng, Badstuber, Alaba – Tymoshchuk (Kroos 53′), Schweinsteiger – Robben, Mueller, Ribery (Contento 90+1′), Gomez

FC AUGSBURG : Jentzsch – Verhaegh, Sankoh, Langkamp, Ostrzolek – Hosogai (Hain 82′) – Ndjeng (Werner 85′), Koo, Baier, Bellinghausen – Raffael (Callsen-Bracker 55′)

FC Augsburg 1 – Bayern Munich 2

Brazil international defender RAFINHA of Bayern Munich and his opposite number on the field, FC Augsburg midfielder TOBIAS WERNER (13), collide in midair during the all-Bavarian Derby and first-ever Bundesliga meeting between these two particular intra-state rivals at the sold-out SGL Arena in Germany’s third oldest city.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 12

1 – FC AUGSBURG ——————– Hosogai 59′
2 – BAYERN MUNICH ————– Gomez 16′, Ribery 28′

After scoring twice inside the first half hour, the visitors surrendered the initiative to their hosts in the second half and, ultimately, needed a sensational save from the national team first choice as table-toppers BAYERN MUNICH fended off cellar-dwellers FC AUGSBURG 2-1 to take this particular Bavarian Derby and stretch their lead in the Bundesliga to five points after a dozen rounds.

Just over a quarter of an hour into the match, in-form France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY won a corner kick on the left which he took himself. The ensuing header from Belgium international defender DANIEL VAN BUYTEN produced a sharp save from FC Augsburg’s Bundesliga debutant MOHAMED AMSIF, but the 22-year-old former Germany youth international of Moroccan descent actually parried the ball into the path of lethal Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, as well. Last season’s goal-scoring champion quickly nodded the rebound into the net for his 13th Bundesliga goal this term and a 1-0 Bayern Munich lead.

Ribery, himself, doubled Bayern Munich’s advantage in the first-ever Bundesliga encounter between the record German champions and first division novices FC Augsburg barely a dozen minutes later. Receiving a ball on the left in the box from Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER, the diminutive Frenchman first started right then cut back left to thoroughly bamboozle the pair of would-be Augsburg defenders. A left-footed, precise low shot past the outstretched Amsif tucking just inside the far post allowed Ribery to record his sixth goal of this Bundesliga season.

FC Augsburg stopped conceding possession, not to mention territory, so cheaply and began to play with a greater sense of urgency in the second half as the hosts effectively took the mattter straight to Bayern Munich. Who is to say what might have been if FC Augsburg had actually been on target with just a few of the many chances it created. Still, the home side officially did make a game of it with a little over half an hour to play.

A corner kick was not properly cut out and midfielder DANIEL BRINKMANN in deep at the left post was allowed to head the ball all the way back across the face of goal. Over waiting on the right side was FC Augsburg’s Japan international midfielder HAJIME HOSOGAI, who was more than happy to let the ball bounce and then rocket a shot, this time on target. Austria international midfielder DAVID ALABA, filling in for the injured Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, actually managed to clear the ball for Bayern Munich off the post — but not before, television replays easily confirmed, the entire ball had crossed the goal line.

FC Augsburg had a glorious opportunity to level the match in the 83rd minute after Albania international striker EDMOND KAPLLANI was put clear through but Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER, the expensive summer signing from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen, confronted the 29-year-old second half substitute in the always-difficult one-on-one situation and produced a spectacular one-handed save to secure all three points for Bayern Munich.

Ukraine international ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK was shown the straight red card deep into injury time, which means the manpower of the Bayern Munich midfield will be stretched even further as a result of the impending Bundesliga suspension to be imposed …

Streaker Bares All In Bavarian Derby

================================================================
As Ukraine international midfielder ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK (44) of Bayern Munich stands unimpressed with the situation, the uncivilized (and unclothed) pitch invader is chased by FC Augsburg’s Angolan-born, former Germany U-21 international striker NANDO RAFAEL during the all-Bavarian Derby — the first Bundesliga meeting ever between the two clubs — at the SGL Arena in Germany’s third oldest city.
