1.FC Nuremberg 1 – Bayern Munich 1

With the watchful eye of match referee MANUEL GRAEFE of Berlin keeping careful track of events, 1.FC Nuremberg midfielder MARKUS FEULNER hopes to settle the ball or, perhaps, distribute before Germany international midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER of Bayern Munich (left) can effectively get involved at the venerable Frankenstadion during the staging of the 185th edititon of the always-intense BAVARIAN DERBY.

Spieltag # 12

1 – 1.FC NUREMBERG —————— Feulner 46′
1 – BAYERN MUNICH —————— Mandzukic 3′

As the old saying goes, ‘anything can and will happen in a rivalry match’, then — The visitors stormed to a third-minute lead only to have the hosts equalize within sixty seconds of the re-start and then later hold out after being reduced to ten men as record Bundesliga champion BAYERN MUNICH and intra-state, arch-rival 1.FC NUREMBERG drew 1-1 in the 185th installment of the BAYRISCHES DERBY.

Many refer to the match as the FRAENKISCH-BAIRISCHES DERBY, which translates into the “Franconian-Old Bavaria Derby” because the 1.FC Nuremberg supporters do not consider either the football club or themselves to be non-Bavarian.

Whatever the case, it did not take the visitors long to go out in front. This after Bayern Munich’s 34-year-old midfielder ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK, the national team captain of Ukraine who has earned 123 caps (4 go) in his career, stole a ball in the offensive third of the field and then quickly found Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS wide on the right wing with a precise pass. Lovely service from Kroos allowed Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC to simply tap home from close range at the back post and notch his ninth Bundesliga goal of this season.

The visitors had a glorious chance to grab a second goal ten minutes before the break when Mandzukic presented an outstanding pass for Bayern Munich’s overlapping Brazil international right back RAFINHA in the box. Nowadays a reserve normally, the 27-year-old defender signed by the record German champions from Italian Serie A club FC Genoa for a transfer fee of 5.5 million Euros in the summer of 2011 hit his shot straight at 1.FC Nuremeberg goalkeeper RALPH SCHAEFER. It was, to be sure, a missed opportunity that the visiting side of trainer JUPP HEYNCKES would grow to rue immeasurably.

======================================================================

======================================================================
Bayern Munich’s Brazilian defender DANTE seeks to settle the ball in spite of the challenge from 1.FC Nuremberg striker SEBASTIAN POLTER (8), the Germany U-21 international on loan from Vfl Wolfsburg this season, during the playing of the 185th Bavarian Derby match witnessed by a capacity crowd of 50,000 enthusiastic football supporters at the fabulous Frankenstadion.
======================================================================

This because “der Club” immediately fought back in the first minute of the second half after Kroos lost possession in his own third of the field. 1.FC Nuremberg midfielder MARKUS FEULNER then took his chance well with a nasty, swerving blast from a full 25 yards out that Bayern Munich’s befuddled Germany first choice MANUEL NEUER could only get a hand to but not keep out. A memorable goal for the 30-year-old veteran, who began his professional career with Bayern Munich and made 13 Bundesliga appearances in two and a half terms for the record German champions before transferring to 1.FC Koeln during the Winterpause in the middle of the 2003/04 football campaign.

1.FC Nuremberg might have grabbed the lead shortly thereafter, as well, but Bayern Munich’s Brazilian centerback DANTE, the off-season signing from Borussia Moenchengladbach who has been so influential for his new club already this season, was able to make a desperate block from a dangerous half-volley from Germany U-21 international striker SEBASTIAN POLTER. Later, a fine header from the youngster Polter forced a good save from Neuer and Sweden international defender PER NILSSON did not miss by much with his free header for 1.FC Nuremberg. The home side lost whatever momentum they had been building, however, when former Germany U-21 international TIMO GEBHART, the feisty, former TSV 1860 Munich and Vfb Stuttgart midfielder, was sent off for his intentional elbow to the face of Bayern Munich’s Germany international midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER in the 76th minute.

Seeking to capitalize on the man-advantage as a result of Gebhart’s early dismissal, the trainer Heynckes took the goal-scorer Mandzukic off in favor of aging Peru international striker CLAUDIO PIZARRO in an effort to spark the Bayern Munich attack. By this time, though, der Club were content to pack the box while keeping an eye on the point and, it must be said, were very effective at doing so. The visitors, who possessed the ball 65% of the time for the duration of the match, would never break through.

And so the two rivals were left to share the spoils in the 185th installment of the Bayrisches Derby.

3/31/12
Bundesliga
Spieltag # 28

0 – 1.FC NUREMBERG
1 – BAYERN MUNICH —————— Robben 69′

An individual moment of brilliance from a genuine world class player ultimately tipped the scales in a typically-tense and tight rivalry match as record German champion BAYERN MUNICH edged pesky 1.FC NUREMBERG 1-0 in the 184th BAYRISCHES DERBY to pull within three inviting three points of the leaders at the top of the Bundesliga table

Of course, Bayern Munich had not won on the road at the Frankenstadion since September of 2005 and, indeed, it was the hosts who threatened to draw first blood in the big Bavarian intra-state battle. This when 1.FC Nuremberg defender PHILIPP WOLLSCHEID bounced his header off a corner kick straight at Germany’s World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER standing in between the sticks for the white-shirted visitors. And Argentina international defender JAVIER PINOLA, the 29-year-old Bundesliga veteran who has been with 1.FC Nuremberg since arriving from Racing Club de Avellaneda in the summer of 2005, had a good opportunity for der Club early on, as well, but screwed his low shot wide of both the goalpost and a diving Neuer.

On the heels of Bayern Munich’s important away victory in the UEFA Champions League against French side Olympique Marseille and with more vital matches still ahead, trainer JUPP HEYNCKES made changes to the Startelf yet again. DIEGO CONTENTO, the 21-year-old who had made just five substitute appearances for the 2011/12 campaign entering the return Bayrisches Derby encounter, walked out with the first team and began at left back for the very first time all season. And, for a second consecutive week in the Bundesliga, veteran Croatia international DANIJEL PRANJIC also featured in the Startelf, this time out on the left wing.

========================================================

========================================================

Pranjic was directly involved in what was, perhaps, the visitors’ best chance of the entire first half but in-form Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN steered his header wide after a clinical cross from the 30-year-old Croatian, who has been with Bayern Munich since transferring from Dutch club SC Heerenveen in the summer of 2009.

It should be noted that Bayern Munich, who have been very busy all this month posting dramatic, midweek victories in both the D.F.B. Pokal and UEFA Champions League competitions, appeared sluggish and tired in the opening forty-five minutes opposite a determined and disciplined 1.FC Nuremberg operating with a great deal of focus in the big Bayrisches Derby match.

But the star-studded visitors began to steadily increase the pressure once Heynckes went to his bench roughly ten minutes into the second half, with Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER making his entrance first followed by the explosive France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY only a couple of minutes later.

=============================================

=============================================
SWEET SIXTEEN — Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN, who scored 16 Bundesliga goals for the record German champions in his first term after transferring from Spanish giant Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, settled the 184th Bayrisches Derby with his 16th goal in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season at the expense of traditional intra-state rival 1.FC Nuremberg at the sold-out Frankenstadion.
=============================================

Both Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ and Bayern Munich were very hard done by the linesman after the Bundesliga’s leading goal-scorer had the ball in the back of the net in the 66th minute. Television replays clearly showed Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER was not in the offsides position just before racing onto a brilliant pass into the box from Robben. However, host 1.FC Nuremberg were only let off the hook a short while.

This because the relatively-inexperienced rearguard DOMINIK MAROH made a regrettable decision in his own defensive third and surrendered the ball very cheaply to Bayern Munich’s Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS, who quickly lobbed over the backline for an unmarked Ribery. A fierce blast from the dynamic little Frenchman was admirably saved by 1.FC Nuremberg goalkeeper RAPHAEL SCHAEFER in the 69th minute but no one could clear the rebound to safety. Like a shark to blood, the lurking Robben snapped into action and rifled an accurate, low shot from the top of the box just inside the helpless Schaefer’s left hand post to score his 11th goal of this Bundesliga season.

The visitors might have added a second but Schaefer denied Robben at the near post and Gomez could only head the cross of Bayern Munich captain and Germany World Cup fullback PHILIPP LAHM off the crossbar with time winding down. Then at the death, 1.FC Nuremberg might have snatched a share of the spoils when Neuer made a complete mess of a long, dipping drive from thirty meters by Israel international midfielder ALMOG COHEN but the sharp rebound off the post did the home side no favors. And so Bayern Munich survived the 184th Bayrisches Derby and were victorious for the first time on its last five visits to the Frankenstadion.

Bayrisches Derby : 1. FC Nuremberg v Bayern Munich

======================================================
Olympiastadion, Munich, November 25, 1978 — Two starters from West Germany’s 1974 FIFA World Cup title-winning squad meet again as Bayern Munich’s PAUL BREITNER (8), the former legionnaire with Real Madrid in Spain who had recently returned to Bavaria via Eintracht Braunschweig, and 1.FC Nuremberg’s ULI HOENESS square off in midfield during the Bayrisches Derbyspiel … Hoeness, who netted 11 goals in 30 matches for Bayern Munich during the 1977/78 Bundesliga campaign, had only just made his first appearance for 1.FC Nuremberg at the beginning of the month after being sent out on loan. Tragically still struggling mightily to cope with the lingering effects of a serious knee injury, Hoeness did not score in a dozen Bundesliga matches for 1.FC Nuremberg and would soon call it quits at the incredibly early age of 27 after the 1978-79 campaign.
======================================================

Before the advent of the modern-day federal league to begin the 1963/64 football season in West Germany, both teams representing the two largest cities in the southern state of Bavaria competed in the old Oberliga Sued. In stark contrast to contemporary times, 1.FC NUREMBERG, who were originally founded in May of 1900, were easily the stronger of the two teams in what their supporters refer to as “FRAENKISCH – BAYRISCHES DERBY” and recorded 17 wins with nine draws in the 34 league meetings between the period immediately after the Second World War and the formation of the Bundesliga. Of course, since then, BAYERN MUNICH have been completely dominant in the BAYRISCHES DERBY :

Bundesliga …… 33 Bayern Munich … 11 1.FC Nuremberg … 11 ties
D.F.B. Pokal …… 7 Bayern Munich ….. 1 1.FC Nuremberg
——————————————————————————————————
total …………….. 40 Bayern Munich … 12 1.FC Nuremberg … 11 ties

It is accuate to note, however, that Bayern Munich have not won away at the Frankenstadion opposite intra-state rival 1.FC Nuremburg since September of 2005; the record German champions are winless on their last four road trips in the Bayrisches Derby with a record of one loss and three ties to show.

Spieltag # 11

4 – BAYERN MUNICH ———— Gomez 2′, 68′, Schweinsteiger 19′, Ribery 39′
0 – 1.FC NUREMBERG

Yet another Blitztor followed up by two more first half strikes essentially settled the affair rather early as Bundesliga leaders BAYERN MUNICH cruised to a thorough 4-0 triumph over traditional intra-state rival 1.FC NUREMBERG in the latest installment of the Bayrisches Derby and remained at the top of the German first division.

Bayern Munich needed just 88 seconds to open the scoring after Germany international defender HOLGER BADSTUBER lifted a precise long ball to BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER out on the right wing. The Germany World Cup midfielder skillfully settled with a delicate touch and immediately issued a precise cross for Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ to run onto and head past 1.FC Nuremberg goalkeeper ALEXANDER STEPHAN. The goal, an eleventh of the season in the Bundesliga for the 26-year-old striker, was, in fact, the first Kopfballtor for Gomez this term.

Bayern Munich, who have not lost at home to 1.FC Nuremberg since the 1991-92 season and have now won eleven matches with two draws since, doubled its advantage in the 19th minute after some of the most eye-pleasing build-up of this entire campaign thus far. Germany World Cup left back PHILIPP LAHM worked the one-two with France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY and galloped into the penalty area before pulling the ball back for Gomez at the top of the box. The regining Bundesliga Torjaegermeister unselfishly laid the ball of for the approaching Schweinsteiger, who uncorked a firece blast just inside the post to leave Stephan absolutely no prayer.

================================================================

Six minutes before the halftime break, Ribery turned on the left wing with a ball from the Bayern Munich club captain Lahm and cut back into the center before rifling a low, right-footer to beat the shell-shocked Stephan. The in-form Frenchman has been a dominant force for the Bayern attack with five goals and seven assists to his credit already in the first eleven matches of this 2011-12 Bundesliga season. This all the more important considering the contined absence of superstar Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN.

Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER had his eight-game shutout streak in the Bundesliga snapped by Hannover 96 on his last outing for Bayern Munich but came off his line extremely well to smother a ball at the feet of 1.FC Nuremberg’s 22-year-old Czech Republic international striker TOMAS PEKHART roughly ten minutes into the second half. Later the 25-year-old backstop preserved his clean sheet with a sharp reflex save off a close range header from Pekhart. Neuer has now ‘spielte zu Null’ (played to zero, i.e., picked up the shutout) in nine of his first eleven Bundesliga matches for Bayern since signing his highly-controversial move from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen this summer.

In the meantime, the 22-year-old Badstuber had already been unlucky to rattle the proverbial woodwork but then released Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS down the left wing with another standout pass. The 21-year-old midfielder made a threatening run to the goal line before squaring to give Gomez a simple tap in. With a second score of the match, the current scoring leader in the German top flight this season, as well, took his career tally for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga to an even 50 goals in only 71 matches.

To review, Gomez was bought by Bayern Munich from Vfb Stuttgart in the summer of 2009 for the then-record German transfer fee of 30.0 million Euros.

Bayern Munich added a second goal a dozen minutes into the second half after 1.FC Nuremberg goalkeeper RAPHAEL SCHAEFER felled Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ with an unwise, feet-first challenge.

France World Cup midfielder FRANCK RIBERY returned from a lengthy injury absence to appear as a second half substitute for Bayern Munich and took the corner kick that Gomez stooped down low to head past the hapless Schaefer for his second goal of the Bayrisches Derby.

With the brace in the Bavarian duel, the 25-year-old former Vfb Stuttgart striker pushed his Bundesliga total to seven goals and now boasts 12 goals in all competitions to lead Bayern Munich this season.

Following the victory over 1.FC Nuremberg, Bayern Munich jumped four spots in the standings to stand sixth on 19 points from a dozen Bundesliga matches.

Bayrisches Derby Record : Bayern Munich v FC Nuremberg

========================================================
The latter half of the banner behind the goal at the Allianz Arena in the capital city of the German state of Bavaria embodies the spirit of the rivalry involved with the Bayrisches Derby between Bayern Munich and 1.FC Nuremberg — “SIEGE FUER UNSERE STADT” — Victories For Our City.
========================================================

The Bayrisches Derby is certainly one of the most interesting rivlaries in all of German football, all the more so this year since 1.FC NUREMBERG are actually ahead of their Bavarian intra-state nemesis to the south, BAYERN MUNICH, in the Bundesliga standings entering Sunday’s match at the Allianz Arena.

Before the advent of the Bundesliga to begin the 1963-64 football season in West Germany, both teams representing the two largest cities in Bavaria played in the old Oberliga Sued. In contrast to contemporary times, 1.FC Nuremberg, who were founded in May of 1900, held sway in the Bayrisches Derby with 17 wins and nine ties in 34 league meetings between the period immediatley after the Second World War and the formation of the Federal League. However, since that time, Bayern Munich, formed in February of 1900, have been dominant in the regional rivarly.

Bundesliga — Bayern Munich 31, 1.FC Nuremberg 11, tied 10

TOTAL ——– Bayern Munich 38, 1.FC Nuremberg 12, tied 10
————————————————————————————————

Meanwhile, 1.FC Nuremberg has not won in Munich since the spring of 1992.

Now, perhaps more than ever, Bayern Munich need to collect all three points from the traditional Bavarian Zweikampf. Following Saturday’s action in the Bundesliga, the defending German champions stood tenth in the table with just 16 points from their first 11 games of the season. Two points ahead are 1.FC Nuremberg, seventh at the moment in the German top flight.
