Stevens, Red Bull Salzburg Survive Rocky Start

========================================================

To say RED BULL SALZBURG had a rocky start to the 2010-11 campaign would be much like stating snow can be found in the Alps during winter.

After all, the defending champions of Austria collected just one win from their first six matches to begin the Bundesliga schedule, scoring a grand total of five goals in the process — hardly an offensive avalanche to say the least.

Red Bull Salzburg fashioned five goals opposite HB Torshavn to kick off their UEFA Champions League program and then proceeded to lose the return leg 1-0 on the Faroe Islands a fortnight later. Ultimately, Dutch head coach HUUB STEVENS’ charges were eliminated from the Champions League by Israeli club FC Hapoel Tel Aviv. The Austrian side would then fare rather poorly in the UEFA Europa League with nary a victory and but a single goal from six games at the group stage.

What’s more, Red Bull Salzburg were knocked out of the Austrian Cup 3-1 by little Blau Weiss Linz, a modest side who normally play in a tiny stadium with a capacity for 2,000 people and compete at the third division level, in late September.

========================================================

This past summer, of course, Red Bull Salzburg sold off the team’s top two goal-scorers from last season’s title-winning squad. Austria international striker MARC JANKO, who led Red Bull with 18 goals in the Bundesliga, was transferred to Dutch side FC Twente Enschede for a fee of 7.0 million Euros. Toward the end of August, Cameroon international midfielder SOMEN TCHOYI, who had eight goals in the Bundesliga a year ago for Red Bull, was shipped to Premier League club West Bromwich Albion for a price believed to be 2.5 million English pounds (roughly 3.01 Euros).

Red Bull Salzburg spent a considerable amount of money — as far as Austrian clubs are concerned — in an effort to strengthen the attack. A trio of youthful South American strikers, however, have, thus far, failed to match the investment of a combined 8.4 million Euros with a truckload of goals. The Argentine GUSTAVO ZARATE, the Brazilian ALAN and the Uruguayan JOAQUIN BOGHOSSIAN have, collectively, delivered just five goals from 38 man-games played for Red Bull through the first 19 contests on the Bundesliga calendar.

Zarate, the cheapest of the three at 1.4 million Euros, has the most goals with three in the Bundesliga and another pair in Europe. Alan, the most expensive purchase at 3.767 Euros, has the least goals in all competitions with but a solitary Bundesliga strike. The 3.23 million Euro man Boghossian, meanwhile, has appeared in just nine Bundesliga matches.

28-year-old Austria international striker ROMAN WALLNER, whose loan move from LASK Linz was made permanent in the summer for 1.3 million Euros, leads Red Bull Salzburg with both nine goals in the Bundesliga and 13 goals in all competitions this term.

========================================================
(Jon Super/AP) — GERHARD TREMMEL has contested 125 games in the German top flight for SpVgg Unterhaching, Hannover 96, SC Hertha Berlin and Energie Cottbus in his career. The veteran was signed to replace last season’s first choice for Red Bull Salzburg, Sweden international EDDIE GUSTAFSSON, who broke both his fibula and tibia last April. Tremmel started all 19 Bundesliga games for Red Bull entering the winter break. (Jon Super/AP)
========================================================

Domestically, Stevens’ men have righted the ship since the listless start to the season. Red Bull Salzburg lost just once on their last ten outings in the leage while winning six games in that span; heading into the annual winter break, Red Bull sit in third place just four points behind the current table-toppers in Austria, SV Ried.

A great strength this term in the Bundesliga for Red Bull Salzburg has been the defense. Back-stopped by 32-year-old German goalkeeper GERHARD TREMMEL, who arrived on a free transfer from German 2.Bundesliga side Energie Cottbus this summer, the defending champions have conceded a circuit-low 13 goals in the Austrian top flight thus far. Still looking to improve, however, Red Bull Salzburg bought Brazilian defender DOUGLAS DA SILVA from Israeli club FC Hapoel Tel Aviv for 2.6 million Euros just after the New Year.

Douglas, whom it is hoped can provide a spark to the offense from the backline, will, most likely, go straight into the team immediately; a pair of 29-year-olds, Uganda international IBRAHIM SEKAGYA and Nigeria World Cup defender RABIU AFOLABI have been the regular center backs for Red Bull Salzburg to this point.

========================================================

Holland international midfielder DAVID MENDES DA SILVA, a summer purchase of 2.65 million Euros from Dutch club AZ 67 Alkmaar, has proven to be a valuable addition to Stevens’ squad. The 28-year-old typically deploys in a holding role in front of the back four and has contributed to the stingy defensive record. Moreover, Mendes da Silva, who scored three goals in 58 games for AZ 67 over his last two seasons in the Dutch Eredivise, has added three goals in 17 games for Red Bull Salzburg this season.

Austria international midfielder JAKOB JANTSCHER has has had his moments since joining Red Bull Salzburg this this off-season from Sturm Graz in return for 1.06 million Euros; turning 22 today, the youngster is second on the club with four goals in the Bundesliga.

Slovakia international DUSAN SVENTO, who arrived in the summer of 2009 after winning consecutive titles in the top flight of the Czech Republic, has seen his goal-scoring rate drop this term. The 25-year-old midfielder, who cost Red Bull 2.0 million Euros from Slavia Prague, scored five goals in the Bundesliga last season but has none after 14 appearances, all starting assignments, in the top flight of Austria this term. Svento did score two goals in Europe, including the only goal for Red Bull Salzburg at the group stage of the UEFA Europa League this season.

UEFA Europa League
Group Stage
12/16/2010

1 – KKS Lech Poznan (POL) ———— Stilic 30′

A goal a half hour into the match was more than enough for visiting Polish club KKS LECH POZNAN to see off a punchless Austrian Bundesliga side RED BULL SALZBURG 1-0 to conclude Group A play in the UEFA Europa League.

After controlling a ball from Serbian defensive midfielder IVAN DJURDJEVIC in the box on the left, Poland international midfielder SLAWOMIR PESZKO cut back and provided a square ball for Bosnia / Herzegovina international midfielder SEMIR STILIC to shoot past Red Bull Salzburg’s German reserve goalkeeper ALEXANDER WALKE in the 30th minute.

A dismal European campaign comes to a merciful conclusion for Dutch head coach HUUB STEVENS’ charges. The defending Austrian Bundesliga titlists, Red Bull Salzburg were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the final hurdle before the group stage and failed to record a win in their final eight European matches this term. Red Bull Salzburg also managed just one goal in six games in Group A of the UEFA Europa League.

Surprising Polish outfit KKS Lech Poznan finished level on 11 points with English Premier League club Manchester City but take second place in the group on goal differential.

Red Bull Salzburg Have Douglas Da Silva From FC Hapoel Tel Aviv

========================================================

Continuing to spend like no other team in Austria can, defending champions RED BULL SALZBURG have snapped up skilled as well as uncompromising Brazilian defender DOUGLAS DA SILVA from defending Israeli League and Cup champions FC Hapoel Tel Aviv for a transfer fee of 2.6 million Euros.

Da Silva, 26, was a key figure and scored two goals from a dozen appearances in the successful run of FC Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Champions League this term; of course, Red Bull Salzburg were knocked out of that competition this past August by the Israeli club at the final hurdle to the group stage.

Red Bull Salzburg, with GERHARD TREMMEL an ever-present between the sticks after arriving from the German 2.Bundesliga side Energie Cottbus to start the season, have conceded an Austrian Bundesliga-low baker’s dozen goals but, regardless, are in third place in the standings and looking to strengthen the team during the winter break.

UEFA Europa League
Group Stage
12/2/2010

3 – Manchester City (ENG) ———— Balotelli 18′, 65′, A. Johnson 78′
0 – Red Bull Salzburg (AUT)

A skillful side volley less than twenty minutes in started Premier League club MANCHESTER CITY on the way to a comfortable 3-0 win over defending Austrian Bundesliga champion RED BULL SALZBURG in Group A of the UEFA Europa League.

20-year-old MARIO BALOTELLI spearheaded the effort for Italian manager ROBERTO MANCINI’s side with a pair of strikes, including an impressive side volley to start the scoring. Signed from defending Italian Serie A and UEFA Champions League titleists Inter Milan this summer for a transfer free believed to be around 24.0 million English pounds, the Italy international forward seemingly non-chalantly stuck out his left foot to meet the cross of PABLO ZABALETA in the eighteenth minute. It was, of course, Balotelli who inaugurated Manchester City’s 2010-11 UEFA Europa League campaign with the only goal of the match against CS FS Timosoara in Romania back on August 19.

Balotelli, who has scored two goals in four Premier League games (three starts) since embarking for England, doubled Manchester City’s advantage in the second half after 34-year-old veteran France international midfielder PATRICK VIEIRA’s attempted shot produced what turned out to be the perfect pass.

England international ADAM JOHNSON, who has scored one goal for Manchester City in 14 Premier League games thus far being deployed mostly as a substitute, added a third for the home side; starting on the left wing, the 23-year-old midfielder cut inside and beat three defenders before calmly curling the ball around Red Bull Salzburg’s German goalkeeper GERHARD TREMMEL for a second goal in the UEFA Europa League this season.

With the victory, Manchester City secured their place in the knockout round of 32 this spring and rendered the final Group A match two weeks from now with Italian Serie A side FC Juventus of Turin, who cannot advance in the UEFA Europa League after a draw with KKS Lech Poznan in Poland, meaningless.

UEFA Europa League
Group Stage
10/21/2010

1 – Red Bull Salzburg (AUT) ———— Svento 36′
1 – FC Juventus (ITA) ——————— Krasic 48′

An immediate goal from a second half substitute enabled visiting Italian Serie A side FC JUVENTUS to scrape a 1-1 draw in the Alpine clash with RED BULL SALZBURG in Group A of the UEFA Europa League.

Red Bull Salzburg, with two losses to show from the first two group games, went on the attack from the outset of the match. The hosts scored first in the 36th minute when Slovak international DUSAN SVENTO, who cost 2.0 million Euros when signed from Czech Republic club Slavia Prague in July of 2009, received a pass from Holland international midfielder DAVID MENDES DA SILVA on the left. The 25-year-old midfielder made space with a fine move on the edge of the box to fire a seeing eye shot that tucked neatly inside the far right post.

Svento’s second goal of the season in Europe was also Red Bull Salzburg’s first strike at the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

(Joe Klamar/AFP/Getty Images)
========================================================

Juventus manager LUIGI DEL NERI made a change at halftime and inserted Serbia World Cup midfielder MILOS KRASIC, a late summer signing costing 15.0 million Euros from Russian club CSKA Moscow, into the line-up for The Old Lady.

The wisdsom of this decision manifested itself immediately when the cross of PAOLO DE CEGLIE’s cross from the left was allowed to bounce in the box by the Red Bull Salzburg defense; Krasic chested the ball down and left German goalkeeper GERHARD TREMMEL no chance from close range for his first career goal in Europe for Juventus.

Man of the man ALEXANDER MANNINGER, the 33-year-old Austria international goalkeeper facing his one-time employers, made his most important stop for FC Juventus late in injury time with a save on 21-year-old Austria international midfielder JAKOB JANTSCHER, who came on as a second half substitute for Red Bull Salzburg.

A third consecutive draw for Juventus, then, at the group stage of the UEFA Europa League and, thus, The Old Lady leaves a chance to take second place ahead of Polish side KKS Lech Poznan go by the boards.

Shortly after the halftime break, Lech Poznan’s Belarus international midfielder SERGEI KRIVETS uncorked a long-range effort that Red Bull Salzburg’s German goalkeeper GERHARD TREMMEL could only parry for a corner; veteran Colombian defender MANUEL ARBOLEDA headed in the ensuing kick to give the home side the lead in the 47th minute.

Red Bull Salzburg Unceremoniously Dumped From OFB Pokal

=====================================================

=====================================================

For Dutch coach HUUB STEVENS, the results continue a progression from bad to worse.

Third from bottom in the Bundesliga with one victory from the first five games and already knocked out of the lucrative UEFA Champions League before the Group Stage, RED BULL SALZBURG have now suffered further disgrace with defeat at the hands of third division side BLAU-WESS LINZ 3-1 in the second round of the OFB Pokal at the Linzer Stadion. (Austrian Cup).

To help put things into perspective, Blau-Weiss Linz have an annual operating budget of 400,000 Euros whereas Red Bull Salzburg spent 13.5 million Euros alone just on new players this off-season summer.

Red Bull made four changes from the team that lost 2-0 to English Premier League club Manchester City to start the Group Stage phase of the UEFA Europa League including the insertion of the back-up goalkeeper into the line-up :

Walke – Schwegler, Afolabi, Sekagya, Svento – Mendes da Silva – Pokrivac, Jantscher – Alan, Hierlaender – Boghossian

substitutes – Augustinussen, Cziommer, Wallner

27-year-old ALEXANDER WALKE, a summer signing from German second division side Hansa Rostock, was making his third start in goal, all in cup competitions, for Red Bull Salzburg this season; it was Walke who was between the sticks for the humbling 1-0 loss to tiny Faroe Islands side HB Torshavn back on July 20 during the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase.

Staging the Cup match at the home ground of Bundesliga side LASK Linz, the regional leaguers Blau-Weiss Linz assumed a 3-0 lead by the 65th minute and Red Bull Salzburg only escaped being shutout when Austria international striker ROMAN WALLNER scored in the 91st minute.

“It can’t get any worse than that,” stated Red Bull Salzburg Sportchef (sporting director) DIETMAR BEIERSDORFER in an article appearing at the official club website. “Naturally, the manner in which we are playing football at the moment is not acceptable…Of course you can get knocked in the Cup against supposed underdogs — but not like that.”

One can only wonder how long the Dutchman Stevens will be sticking around in Salzburg…

Two of the higher-priced players for English Premier League side MANCHESTER CITY were on target as corporate-backed RED BULL SALZBURG fell 2-0 at home to start Group A play in the UEFA Europa League.

Spain World Cup midfielder DAVID SILVA, whom Manchester City paid Spanish side CF Valencia a staggering 25.875 million English pounds to sign earlier this summer, sent the visitors to the early lead with a casual finish in the eighth minute after Brazilian striker JO made a play the lay the ball off in the box.

The 23-year-old Jo, a 17.0 million English pound purchase from Russian club CSKA Moscow in the summer of 2008 whom many thought would be sent out on loan again this season, earned his place in the team in part as a result of injuries to Togo international EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR and Italy international MARIO BALOTELLI.

Jo certainly justified his selction over Paraguay World Cup striker ROQUE SANTA CRUZ in the second half; Argentina World Cup attacker CARLOS TEVEZ hit a shot from outside the box that Red Bull Salzburg’s German goalkeeper GERHARD TREMMEL could only parry and the Brazilian was on hand to bury the rebound for Manchester City.
