2012 European Championships : Italy 2 – Germany 1

========================================================
Germany winger LUKAS PODOLSKI (10), who has already been sold by relegated 1.FC Koeln for the reported transfer fee of 13.5 million Euros and will play next season in London for English Premier League side FC Arsenal, is closed down by a pair of teammates from traditional Serie A giant FC Juventus Turin, midfielder CLAUDIO MARCHISIO (8) and defender ANDREA BARZAGLI (15), during the 2012 UEFA European Championships semifinal match at the National Stadium (Stadion Narodowy) in Warsaw, Poland.
========================================================

A pair of complete and utter first half failures in central defense enabled an inexperienced and, heretofore, spectacularly unproductive striker to dig a deep hole from which his gift-giving opponents would never escape as ITALY dispatched a truly disappointed GERMANY 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

It is fair to say that Italy striker MARIO BALOTELLI had not exactly set the international football world on fire prior to the semifinal meeting with the Germans at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland. Just two goals on his first dozen appearances for the Azzuri really did not go a long way towards elevating the 21-year-old Manchester City striker to ‘prolific’ status, then. Still, it was a pair of well-taken goals from Balotelli against the run of play that left Germany shocked and stunned only 36 minutes into the clash of traditional neighboring football rivals.

Balotelli’s opening strike in the 20th minute actually marked the first time that Italy, who have won the coveted FIFA World Cup on four occasions, had, amazingly enough, EVER scored a goal at the semifinal stage of the UEFA European Championships in the entire 52-year-old history of the competition.

CORRECTION — The blog shamefully forgot about 1968, the year the Italians defeated the former Yugoslavia in a replay to actually win the European title, itself … so then, a corrected statement should read “Balotelli’s initial strike was the first time that Italy had scored a goal at the semifinal stage of the UEFA European Championships in 44 years”, or something along those lines.

========================================================

========================================================
Italy midfielder ANDREA PIRLO (21) of FC Juventus Turin looks on as his Serie A teammate and national team constituent GIANLUIGI BUFFON (1) secures the football in front of lurking Germany striker MARIO GOMEZ of Bayern Munich during the 2012 UEFA European Championships semifinal match at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.
========================================================

Germany, who have won the FIFA World Cup three times in addition to a record three titles earned at the UEFA European Championships, would go on to outshoot Italy 15-10 over the course of the contest. But, after a shaky beginning in dealing with a low cross from Germany defender JEROME BOATENG of Bayern Munich, the 34-year-old GIANLUIGI BUFFON of FC Juventus Turin showed just exactly why he has been so highly decorated all throughtout his successful career. A total of seven saves and a solitary goal only conceded from the penalty spot was just the sort of performance the Italians needed from their battle-tested goalkeeper with 119 caps and counting.

A signature stop arrived in the second half when Germany substitute winger MARCO REUS of Borussia Moenchengladbach, who had replaced the conspicuously underperforming LUKAS PODOLSKI of 1.FC Koeln on the left after the halftime break, had his menacing free kick curled up and over the wall effectively turned over the crossbar.

The Germans would have plenty of chances with set pieces while piling up an astonishing 14-0 ‘edge’ in corner kicks only to find the Italians, not particularly surprising given the country’s history and tradition of Catenaccio, ready and able to consistently deal with any and all situations.

========================================================

========================================================

Thanks in large part to the efforts of both the captain Buffon as well as defensive midfielder ANDREA PIRLO, the 33-year-old FC Juventus Turin veteran who was selected as Man of the Match by the official website of Euro ’12, German futility against Italy on the big stage continues unabated.

Proud Germany are now winless in eight meetings with the stubborn southern neighbor Italy in a final tournament of a major international competition. This latest victory marks the first time Italy has ever defeated the Germans at the UEFA European Championships as, previously, the Italians had defeated Deutschland in the semifinals (1970, 2006) as well as in the Final (1982), itself, at the FIFA World Cup. The other four encounters between the two traditional footballing powerhouses at major international events have, of course, ended in a draw.

Herzlichen Glueckwuensche fuer Italien!

Champions Forever … Meister Fuer Immer

========================================================

Let’s dance in style, let’s dance for a while
Heaven can wait, we’re only watching the football
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Will our team score some goals or not?

Let us die young or let us live forever
We don’t have the power but we never say never
At the European Championships, life is a short trip
The music’s for the focused man

Can you imagine when this race is won,
Turn our golden faces into the sun?
Praising our players, we will be consistent
The music’s played by the victorious team

Forever champion, I want to be forever champion
Do you really want to reign forever?
Forever, or never?

========================================================

========================================================

Wollen Sie wirklich herrschen fuer immer?
Fuer immer, oder nie?

2012 European Championships : Germany 4 – Greece 2

========================================================
Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER (7) of Bayern Munich is tackled by Greece captain and midfielder KOSTAS KATSOURANIS (21) of Panathinaikos Athens during the 2012 UEFA European Championships quarterfinal match at the PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.
========================================================

Three unanswered second half goals all scored within a 13-minute span proved to be very unfortunate for the competition’s 2004 titlist as single-minded GERMANY overwhelmed luckless GREECE 4-2 at the quarterfinal stage of the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

Spielfuehrer PHILIPP LAHM had taken a very proactive approach to on-field leadership and sent Germany to the lead just before the break. The Bayern Munich left back did well to control Real Madrid midfielder MESUT OEZIL’s pass with his chest first time and lost a potential defender in the process. The captain calmly strode forth to lash a right-footed laser which swerved viciously past Greece goalkeeper MICHALIS SIFAKIS of FC Aris Thessaloniki and met the side netting at the far post for a most emphatic opening goal.

The Greeks hauled themselves right back into the match, however, with a lightning counterattack only ten minutes into the second half. Racing down the right wing, striker DIMITRIS SALPINGIDIS of PAOK Thessaloniki expertly curled an inviting ball into the path of legionnaire GIORGOS SAMARAS. Neither of the Bundesliga teammates, defender JEROME BOATENG and goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Bayern Munich, could intervene effectively and so the Glasgow Celtic winger forced the ball home at close range to bring Greece level.

========================================================

========================================================
Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER (1) of Bayern Munich smothers the ball in advance of Greece striker THEOFANIS GEKAS (17) of Turkish side Samsunspor, the 32-year-old veteran who scored 55 goals in 133 Bundesliga matches for Vfl Bochum, Bayer Leverkusen, SC Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt before signing on in the Super Lig this past January, during the 2012 UEFA European Championships quarterfinal match at the PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.
========================================================

A minute after the hour, the Germans who would enjoy two-thirds of the ball and outshoot the Greeks 24-9 on the whole of the evening, initiated a massive response of their own. The overlapping right back Boateng floated a ball into the area which yet another Real Madrid midfielder, the former Vfb Stuttgart man SAMI KHEDIRA, greeted for a thunderous volley. Sifakis never had a chance as the rocket skimmed in off the crossbar for Khedira, whose last goal for Deutschland decided the game for third place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

A free kick from Oezil in the 68th minute allowed aging veteran striker MIROSLAV KLOSE, the 34-year-old legionnaire who scored 12 goals in the Italian Serie A for SS Lazio Rome this past season, to win an aerial duel with both Sifakis and defender KYRIAKOS PAPADOPOULOS of Bundesliga club Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen in the box and leave the Greek down a pair.

Not so long after recording his 64th career international goal, Klose was instrumental in the creation of Germany’s fourth following a thru-ball from Oezil, as well. Sifakis came off his line and thwarted the Polish-born poacher but the rebound fell perfectly for Borussia Moenchengladbach attacker MARCO REUS, who hammered another spectacular drive which also entered the net via the underside of the crossbar. The Greeks, for all intents and purposes, were through although Salpingidis did pull one back from the spot very late in the contest.

Germany marched into the semifinal round of the UEFA European Championships for the eighth time (’72, ’76, ’80, ’88, ’92, ’96, ’08, ’12) in the last 11 tournaments starting in 1972, the year West Germany shutout the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics 3-0 in the Final.

Klockwork Klose!

========================================================
Germany striker MIROSLAV KLOSE (11) of Italian Serie A side SS Lazio Rome wins the aerial duel with Greece goalkeeper MICHALIS SIFAKIS of FC Aris Thessaloniki and defender KYRIAKOS PAPADOPOULOS of German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen to score his 64th career international goal in the 68th minute of the 2102 UEFA European Championships quarterfinal match at the PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.
========================================================

Considering the last goal scored for the German national side had arrived more than six long months ago, it would be understandable if at least a few people thought that KLOCKWORK KLOSE had quietly stopped ticking.

But there is a major international tournament being contested at the moment. And if there is one thing that veteran Germany Torjaeger MIROSLAV KLOSE truly does well, it is to get the ball in the back of the net at major international tournaments. Perhaps it really all was just as a simple as matter of time, indeed.

It certainly was a courageous decision by the German trainer JUERGEN LOEW to include the aging 34-year-old, Serie A legionnaire in the Startelf against Greece. After all, the record of three goals in as many Group B matches at the 2012 UEFA European Championships brought forth by Bayern Munich striker MARIO GOMEZ was not a bad one, then. Klose definitely came through with the goods, though, and notched his 17th career strike for Deutschland at a major international tournament (31 appearances) while heading what proved to be the match-winning goal against the Greeks in Gdansk.

A magical moment for the Polish-born goal-shark to always cherish and remember, then.

Socialism On Parade At Euro 2012 : Greeks Express Appreciation For All German Bailout Monies

========================================================

========================================================

========================================================

If you are an official representative of the Greek government and would like to offer a sincere and heart-felt apology for this most tasteful display at the GERMANY v GREECE quarterfinal match at the 2012 UEFA European Championships, please feel free to comment at your leisure.

If you are a Greek citizen or just consider yourself a friend of the Greek people, for example, and would like to offer a stern condemnation for the incredibly insulting actions of a “handful” of “misguided” Greek football supporters who do not ‘speak for the mainstream masses, blah, blah, blah’, you are welcome to access the comments section graciously made available for that purpose.

If you are a confirmed Lefty in any country, an admitted sympathizer of any varying degree or, perhaps, only a fellow traveler who normally prefers to just go along to get along and want to see about dumping gasoline on the fire — be advised the blog has a delete button and is completely unconcerned with respect to feelings about that totalitarian-like situation.

========================================================

========================================================

Could’ve sworn I seen the dude with the helmet on TV at that last anti-Austerity riot in Athens, too, but, whatever … I now return you to originally-scheduled programming post haste (pun intended) because I know, once all the bullshit is carefully sorted through, fact of the matter is that there is absolutely no such thing as Utopia.

If there was, someone would be doing my blog posts for me!

2012 European Championships : Germany 2 – Denmark 1

========================================================
Germany makeshift right back LARS BENDER (15) of Bayer Leverkusen, a versatile prospect who is normally deployed in midfield by his Bundesliga paymasters, shields the ball from Denmark winger MICHAEL KROHN-DELHI (9) of FC Broendby Copenhagen during the decisive border battle on the final day of Group B play at the 2012 UEFA European Championships co-hosted by Poland and the Ukraine.
========================================================

A match-winner ten minutes from time finally allowed for some anxious nerves to settle as competent GERMANY defeated typically-stubborn northern neighbor DENMARK 2-1 for a third consecutive Group B triumph in as many matches at the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

The mood, of course, had become somewhat tense in the second half at the Arena Lviv after the news that Portugal had scored to break their deadlock with winless Holland in the other group match at Kharkiv — this situation meant that the Danes would need to beat the Germans outright in order to advance to the quarterfinal round of this competition.

Germany, who entered the contest with Denmark knowing a draw would do no matter what transpired elsewhere, seized the initiative a little less than twenty minutes in. Bayern Munich winger THOMAS MUELLER, who might have struck much earlier but scufted a sweeping shot at close range which Denmark goalkeeper STEPHEN ANDERSEN of French Ligue 1 side FC Evian Gaillard smothered well, cut the ball back into the box after yet another run down the right flank. Bundesliga teammate MARIO GOMEZ, the 26-year-old striker who has already scored three goals at Euro ’12, realized the pass was behind him but deftly steered the service into the path of 1.FC Koeln winger LUKAS PODOLSKI all alone in front.

A grateful Podolski drilled an absolute rocket past the defenseless Andersen and, in doing so, marked his 100th international appearance with a 44th goal for Deutschland.

========================================================

========================================================
Germany left winger LUKAS PODOLSKI (10), the 27-year-old soon-to-be London-based, FC Arsenal legionnaire who registered three goals in qualification matches for Euro ’12 and already ranks as seventh of the all-time goal-scoring chart for Deutschland, focuses on the ball in front of Denmark (6) defender LARS JACOBSEN (6) of FC Copenhagen during the closely-contested Group B match at the Arena Lviv in the Ukraine.
========================================================

The pesky Danes did not stay down for long, however, and hit back exactly five minutes later to give their supporters sincere hope. Winger CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN of traditional Dutch giant Ajax Amsterdam flighted a corner kick and lethal striker NICOLAS BENDTNER of English Premier League FC Sunderland rose at the edge of the box to redirect a header to the front of goal. Six yards out and completely unmarked, winger MICHAEL KROHN-DELHI of FC Broendby Copenhagen was happy to snap his header right over Germany goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Bayern Munich and bring Denmark to level terms.

And Denmark might have even gone to the lead not so long after the restart, as well, but a dangerous, low drive from midfielder JAKOB POULSEN of FC Midtylland grazed off the outside of Neuer’s right hand post. The Germans, in response, began to eat up larger and larger blocks of time in possession as the match wore on even if trainer Juergen Loew’s charges could not land a knockout punch. Germany benefitted from the introduction of Bayer Leverkusen winger ANDRE SCHUERRLE, who forced the Danish custodian Andersen to get down fast with his very first touch.

It was a most unlikely hero who arrived at the back post to doom Denmark once and for all, then. Real Madrid maestro MESUT OEZIL, always a menace in the central attacking midfielder’s role for Germany, played a ball into the area that was a bit too far in front of substitute striker MIROSLAV KLOSE of SS Lazio Rome, the 34-year-old Italian Serie A legionnaire who is, at present, Deutschland’s second-best ever having shot 63 international goals. Not so, however, in the case of the overlapping right back LARS BENDER of Bayer Leverkusen, who had already had a standout night after being surpringsly tapped by Loew to replace suspeneded Bayern Munich defender JEROME BOATENG.

A very cool, side-footed finish belied the 22-year-old’s lack of experience at this level and marked a first-ever goal for Germany by the encouraging youngster at a most opportune moment, indeed.

2012 European Championships : Germany 2 – Holland 1

========================================================
Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN (11) of this season’s beaten UEFA Champions League Finalist Bayern Munich runs past his Bundesiga professional colleague in Bavaria, Germany captain and left back PHILIPP LAHM (16), during the critical 2012 UEFA European Championships Group B match contested at the Metalist Stadium in the Ukranian city of Kharkiv.
========================================================

A pair of well-taken first half strikes from last season’s leading scorer in the Bundesliga held up when a second half rally quickly ran out of steam on a very hot summer night in the Ukraine as confident GERMANY defeated long-time rival and next-door-neighbor HOLLAND 2-1 on the second day of competition in Group B at the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

MARIO GOMEZ of Bayern Munich, who led the German top flight a year ago with 28 goals on the 2010/11 season, twice accepted outstanding service from Bundesliga constituent BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, a tireless engine in midfield for Deutschland all evening long, and skillfully shot past Dutch goalkeeper MAARTEN STEKELENBURG of Italian capital city club AS Roma twice within a quarter of an hour.

Super Mario opened the scoring for Germany in the 24th minute after accepting a surgical pass from Schweinsteiger and turning sharply with a spin-o-rama move the left the Dutch defense little more than an unanswered prayer for what would have been an incorrect offsides decision.

========================================================

========================================================

========================================================
Central defender HOLGER BADSTUBER (14) of Bayern Munich might have scored a second goal for Germany against the Netherlands in the first half even sooner but directed his close-range header right at Holland goalkeeper MAARTEN STEKELENBURG, the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finalist and former Ajax Amsterdam netminder now standing between the stickings in Italy.
========================================================

Shortly after Badstuber went close, Gomez did net a second goal for the Germans with a splendid, sharp-angle shot which curled away from Stekelenburg and tucked just inside the far post. Once again it was the highly-experienced international Schweinsteiger who had delivered a wonderful, final ball to the Bayern Munich Torjaeger in the box. Spanish legionnaire MESUT OEZIL of 2012 La Liga champion Real Madrid, who had been unlucky to hit the woodwork early on in the match with the Dutch, had also been prominently involved by squaring for Schweini.

A 25th career international goal from the prolific Gomez put Germany firmly in control and prompted Dutch trainer BERT VAN MARWIJK to make two key substitutions at the halftime break. One of those sent on for Holland was none other than this season’s leading goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, striker KLAAS JAN HUNTELAAR of Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen. The other was the winger RAFAEL VAN DER VAART of English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, the 29-year-old, one-time SV Hamburg veteran who was making his 98th career appearance for die Oranje in the match against century-old adversary Germany.

Germany goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Bayern Munich, who earned his spurs for the national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa two summers ago, was credited with five saves against Holland by the official website of the 2012 UEFA European Championships and now has registered a dozen saves while conceding just once in two games thus far.

Holland striker ROBIN VAN PERSIE, the 28-year-old FC Arsenal striker who scored 30 goals in the English top flight this term, came into the game more after the restart and forced alert Germany goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Bayern Munich into a flying save with a stinging volley just before the hour. With a little less than twenty minutes remaining, van Persie finally lifted the Dutch back into genuine contention and halved the deficit with a ferocious drive that beat Neuer low to the German’s left. For a shortwhile thereafter, Holland looked as if it might capitalize on the momentum.

But an equalizer never really was on the cards as Germany began to control the ball in earnest while playing a bit of keep away to kill the clock. Holland, having taken off former Bayern Munich ball-winner MARK VAN BOMMEL at halftime, could not come up with a solution to counter that while Huntelaar, who paced the Bundesliga this season with 29 goals for Schalke 04, was well-handled by the German backline.

Germany, who improved its record to 15 wins against 10 losses with 14 ties in matches with the neighboring Dutch since first meeting the Netherlands in April of 1910, has all but assured itself of a place in the quarterfinals with a second consecutive win at Euro 2012. Holland, on the other hand, will have to defeat resurgent Portugal by at least two goals on the third and final day of play in Group B. On top of that positive result, the Dutch will also need the Germans to defeat Denmark, as well.

Euro ’12 – Blaszczykowski Saves Poland’s Bacon … For Time Being

========================================================

A late first half goal from Russia striker ALAN DZAGOEV, already a third of this 2012 UEFA European Championships for the little CSKA Moscow 21-year-old, then, certainly looked to have the host nation on the proverbial ropes. But it was the Poland captain, himself, who was determined to not go down with the ship. And so, just before the hour, the Polish skipper quite literally took matters directly into his own hands, er, ah, feet.

It was a brilliant first touch by JAKUB BLASZCZYKOWSKI that truly enabled the winger from two-time defending German Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund to beguile one last Russian defender and create the most dangerous shooting lane. The well-placed, left-footed missle curled delicately inside the far post only at the last moment and sincerely left outstretched goalkeeper VYACHESLAV MALAFEEV of Zenit St. Petersburg no prayer whatsoever. Without question, a memorable goal for the ages from the captain that will rank among the best ever scored by a member of Poland’s national football team – to speak nothing of a major international tournament on home ground no less.

However, in spite of a 10th career goal for Blaszczykowski on his 53rd career appearance for Poland, the host nation will still have to defeat the neighboring Czech Republic in its third and final Group A match in order to advance to the next round at Euro ’12 …
