Regardless of what level his club has been at, 26-year-old BENEDIKT PLIQUETT has still been a reserve all of his professional footballing life.
However, the third-string goalkeeper for FC ST. PAULI had been promised by trainer HOLGER STANISLAWSKI “four or five weeks” in advance, according to Pliquett, himself, that the one-time SV Hamburg shot-stopper would be in between the sticks for the all-important 131st Hamburg Stadtderby at the Imtech Arena.
Pliquett, of course, began his professional career with SV Hamburg but never even got a game for the reserve side in the Regionalliga Nord before leaving the club in January of 2004 for a spell with Vfb Luebeck.

The German goalkeeper returned to the city of Hamburg and signed with FC St. Pauli to start the 2004-05 campaign. But, the playing situation never really has improved all that much for the Rothosen youth product, who is in his sixth campaign with the Kult Klub now. Entering this term, Pliquett had made just three appearances in the 2.Bundesliga over the past two seasons for FC St. Pauli.
Prior to the Hamburg Stadtderby this term, Pliquett had managed just one start — FC St. Pauli’s 1-0 loss at Regionalliga Nord (fourth division) FC Chemnitzer in the DFB Pokal to open the new season.
Pliquett certainly made the most of his opportunity against SV Hamburg on his very first game in the German top flight, though, and was credited with six saves while collecting a most important clean sheet for FC St. Pauli.
